The Midlands Province has exceeded its wheat production target for 2024 by an impressive 103 percent, with 12,459 hectares planted.

This milestone is a significant step in Zimbabwe’s on-going agricultural revival.

The Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Midlands Province, Owen 'Mudha' Ncube, visited Whanu Farm in Gweru yesterday to celebrate the region’s success in winter wheat farming.

“This is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our farmers. Midlands Province has not only met but surpassed our expectations. We must leverage this momentum to reclaim Zimbabwe’s status as Southern Africa’s bread basket by 2030,” stated Minister Ncube during his visit.

The Minister also discussed future plans to expand wheat cultivation and enhance productivity.

“Our goal is to ensure food security and create a sustainable agricultural sector that benefits all Zimbabweans. With the right strategies and continued support, we can transform our agricultural landscape,” he added.

Whanu Farm manager Clever Matutu expressed his pride and optimism for the future.

“This success wouldn’t have been possible without the collective effort of our farming community and the support from the Government. We are on the right track, and I believe we can achieve even greater heights,” he said.

Commenting on the milestone achievement, the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, and Rural Development, Youth Desk Chief Programmes Coordinator, Mr. Nickros Kajengo expressed his satisfaction with the dedication shown by the country's farmers. He emphasised that their commitment to farming is a crucial step towards achieving food sufficiency and security, which aligns with the targets of Vision 2030 to elevate Zimbabwe to Upper Middle Income Economy status.

“It is pleasing to see our farmers taking farming seriously. This dedication, not only strengthens our food security, but also propels us closer to achieving the ambitious goals set out in Vision 2030. Their hard work is paving the way for a prosperous future for all Zimbabweans,” said Mr. Kajengo.

Meanwhile, the Midlands Province's achievement serves as an inspiring example for other regions in Zimbabwe.

With the momentum gained from this accomplishment, the Midlands Province and its farmers are poised to play a pivotal role in Zimbabwe’s agricultural renaissance, contributing to long-term food security and economic stability.
