Masvingo Province is experiencing a transformative wave of development with the completion of the 132kV power transmission and transformation project at the Bikita mine.

This ambitious project, funded through an offshore loan sourced by Bikita Minerals Sinomine, stands as a testament to the power of international collaboration and innovative engineering.

Speaking at the launch, Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Masvingo Province, Ezra Chadzamira, highlighted the immense benefits of the project.

“The project also provides critical backbone infrastructure for Masvingo City, featuring a higher capacity, more reliable, and efficient 132kV network.

“Living standards in the project area are set to improve markedly. Enhanced electricity access will benefit health and education facilities, enabling better services and improved quality of life for residents.

“Additionally, the incorporation of Optical Ground Wire (OPGW) will enhance internet access for schools, businesses, clinics, and other social amenities in Gutu, Zaka, Nyika, Bikita, and surrounding areas. This improvement in digital infrastructure is expected to catalyse further socio-economic development across the region,” said Minister Chadzamira.

Minister Chadzamira emphasized that Bikita Minerals Sinomine anticipates expanding its workforce as the new power line enhances operational efficiency and opens up new opportunities for growth.

“During the construction phase, the project created over 1,000 jobs, with at least 80 percent of the workforce drawn from local communities. The completion of the project promises even more employment opportunities as Bikita Minerals scales up its operations, transitioning from reliance on diesel generators to a stable and sustainable power supply,” he stated.

Chairman of Sinomine Resources, Wang Pingwei noted that the completion of this power project marks a significant stride towards ecological sustainability and responsible corporate conduct.

“Sinomine has showcased its dedication to environmental protection and community development, setting a benchmark for future projects. This initiative is part of Sinomine Resources' commitment to reducing carbon emissions and promoting ecological sustainability.

“The project, featuring 112 kilometers of power lines and a state-of-the-art substation, was completed in a record-setting 10 months, recognized as the fastest and highest-quality project of its kind by the Zimbabwe Power Transmission and Transformation Company,” he remarked.

The electrification project is a shining example of successful collaboration between the Government and private investors. As the nation progresses towards the national vision for a US$12 billion mining sector, projects like these are crucial for driving sustainable economic development and enhancing the well-being of all Zimbabweans.
