Dinson Iron and Steel Corporation (DISCO) is set to begin the production of pig iron and steel bullets in June 2024.

A source within the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development, who spoke to this publication on condition of anonymity, said that DISCO has ambitious plans for its production capabilities.

"Dinson Iron and Steel Corporation is scheduled to produce 600,000 metric tonnes of steel in Phase 1, which will rise to 1.2 million metric tonnes in Phase 2,” the source revealed

The source further elaborated on the timeline and scope of the project, emphasizing the importance of the initial phase.

"The production of pig iron and steel bullets by DISCO next month will mark the beginning of a new era for Zimbabwe's steel industry. This phase will lay the groundwork for subsequent expansions and technological advancements within the sector,” said the source

The source from the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development highlighted the strategic importance of DISCO's project.

"With the capacity to produce 1.2 million metric tonnes of steel in Phase 2, DISCO is positioned to become a key player in the regional and global steel markets," the source stated.

Meanwhile, steel bullets, known for their durability and strength, can be used in a variety of industrial applications, ranging from construction to automotive manufacturing. Their production within the country will reduce dependency on imports, thereby saving on the import bill of steel products as well as improving the trade balance.

Additionally, the availability of locally produced steel bullets will enhance the competitiveness of Zimbabwean manufacturers. With access to high-quality raw materials, local companies can innovate and produce goods that meet international standards. This can lead to increased exports, driving economic growth and creating job opportunities within the manufacturing sector.

The commencement of pig iron and steel bullet production by DISCO is a pivotal moment for Zimbabwe's manufacturing sector as it plays a crucial role in the nation's industrial landscape.
