The Ministry of Industry and Commerce has expressed grave concern over the illegal practices of certain unscrupulous businesses that are cheating consumers through deceptive tactics, including selling underweight products and using tempered measuring equipment.
Chief Director for Commerce and Consumer Affairs, Dr. Douglas Runyowa, emphasized the importance of adhering to the Trade Measures Act and the Consumer Protection Act, which mandate that products such has rice, sugar, washing powder and cereals be sold in prescribed quantities and clearly labeled. He warned against the use of uncertified or tampered measuring equipment, stressing that all traders must ensure their equipment is compliant with regulations enforced by the Trade Measures Department.
“All traders are required to ensure their equipment complies with standards set by the Trade Measures Department. The Government will exert continuous efforts to halt such illicit practices, including revoking licenses from offending business owners,” said Runyowa.
Dr. Runyowa reiterated the Government’s commitment to curbing these illegal practices, including revoking licenses of offending businesses.
“In line with the ministry's mandate, the Trade Measures Department and other relevant agencies continue to conduct awareness campaigns and enforcement actions targeting businesses engaged in deceptive practices,” said Runyowa.
Consumers such as Tendai Nyakabaya have voiced their dissatisfaction with the prevalence of underweight and mislabeled products, underscoring the importance of addressing these issues to protect consumers' health and rights.
“As consumers we are discontent with the weight of essential goods, noting that they are often packed in half-full measures and some are even expired, posing a health risk if consumed,” said Nyakabaya.
Meanwhile, all efforts by the Second Republic of promoting transparency and integrity in commerce are commendable. Through strict enforcement of consumer protection laws and continuous awareness campaigns, the Government is working diligently to safeguard consumers from unfair and deceptive trade practices and ensuring a fair marketplace for all.
