Recent xenophobic attacks on Zimbabwean immigrants in South Africa have been criticised as misplaced, with growing evidence suggesting a mutually beneficial relationship between the immigrants and the South African economy.

Musina, a border town between South Africa and Zimbabwe, stands out as a prime example of this collaboration, as Zimbabweans have played a pivotal role in transforming the once-sleepy town into an economic hub.

One local citizen in Musina, Tembisa Zodwa, voiced her appreciation for the positive impact Zimbabwean immigrants have had on the town's economy, indicating that Musina town is now experiencing an economic boom attributed to the contributions of Zimbabwean immigrants.

“Contrary to the negative stereotypes often associated with immigration, Musina has experienced an economic boom attributed to the contributions of Zimbabwean immigrants. The influx of skilled and entrepreneurial Zimbabweans has revitalised local businesses and stimulated job creation, leading to a noticeable improvement in the overall standard of living for Musina's residents,” said Zodwa.

Another Musina resident, Themba Xaba, stated that one of the most significant transformations has occurred in the business sector, where Zimbabwean entrepreneurs have established thriving enterprises ranging from small businesses to larger ventures.

“The once-sleepy Musina town is now bustling with economic activity, and the collaborative efforts between Zimbabwean immigrants and local South Africans have been instrumental in shaping Musina's newfound prosperity,” he said.

In light of these positive developments, the Zimbabwean government has taken steps to further strengthen ties with Musina. The recent decision by the Zimbabwean Cabinet to sell treated water to Musina from the Beitbridge water reservoir is seen as a tangible demonstration of the commitment to fostering mutually beneficial relations. This decision not only addresses the water needs of Musina but also serves as a symbol of cooperation and shared prosperity between the two neighbouring nations.

Local authorities on both sides of the border have recognised the importance of working together to ensure the continued growth and development of Musina.
