The Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) is facing a critical juncture in Binga South constituency at a time that it is grappling with internal divisions that have weakened its grip on the region.
In response, that party's National Organising Secretary, Amos Chibaya, has been leading an intensive campaign to bolster support for Nelson Chamisa's preferred candidate, Prince Dubeko Sibanda, in the forthcoming by-election which are slated for 9 December 2023.
A source close to the developments disclosed that Chibaya's campaign strategy is multifaceted and aggressive.
According to the source, Chibaya’s campaign is focusing on discrediting his party’s interim Secretary General, Sengezo Tshabangu, the figure behind the recent recalls, as a key tactic to deter voters from aligning with the latter’s faction.
"The recalls have stirred significant anger and resentment within CCC, impacting its campaigning effectiveness. Chibaya's mission is to solidify support for Sibanda. His approach includes public attacks on Tshabangu, attempting to portray him as a betrayer to sway the electorate in favour of Sibanda," the source said.
The source further revealed that Chibaya, collaborating with Fanuel Cumanzala, the local legislator, was not only targeting internal opponents but also focusing on diminishing the ruling party's image.
Chibaya is allegedly exploiting the narrative of marginalisation experienced by the Batonga people, accusing the Government of marginalisation and neglect.
"Chibaya's strategy involves convincing the electorate of ZANU PF's indifference towards them, using this as leverage to garner votes for CCC. It's a desperate move to regain the once-firm control of the CCC in Binga South," added the source.
However, the source said that this marginalisation strategy has not been universally accepted, as some villagers have criticised this approach, arguing that it misrepresented the actual situation.
"There is scepticism about the marginalisation narrative. While acknowledging past challenges, many villagers recognise the Government's efforts, such as the Presidential Fishing Rigs Scheme, which has brought tangible benefits to the community," the source explained.
As the battle for Binga South heats up, CCC's strategy is under the microscope, with that party's desperation becoming increasingly apparent.
The party is navigating a complex political landscape where its approach is scrutinised and met with scepticism by the very electorate it aims to convince.
The unfolding political drama in Binga South is testament to the challenges which the CCC faces as it strives to maintain influence and navigate internal conflicts, all while trying to resonate with the voters' aspirations and realities.
