In a promising turn of events, wheat deliveries at the Grain Marketing Board (GMB) have begun to trickle in, marking a significant milestone for Zimbabwe's agricultural sector.
According to a reliable source within the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, and Rural Development, 82 506 hectares of winter wheat were successfully harvested by the 9th of this month.
“As of the 9th of this month, an impressive 82 506 hectares of winter wheat have been successfully harvested,” said the source
The source disclosed that the overall yield from this harvest was 437 281 metric tonnes
“Farmers have exceeded expectations with an exceptional average yield of 5.3 metric tonnes per hectare,” the source emphasised
Highlighting the significance of this agricultural triumph, the source underscored that “against a national target of 430 000 tonnes, farmers have exceeded expectations.”
These statistics are not only crucial for understanding the scale of the achievement but it also emphasises the dedication and hard work of the nation’s farmers, as shared by the Ministry insider.
The harvest represents a historic milestone for Zimbabwe, marking the highest wheat output since the crop was first cultivated in the country back in 1966.
“This is the highest wheat output since the inception of wheat cultivation in Zimbabwe in 1966,” the source said.
“The agricultural success is a testament to the dedication and hard work of the nation's farmers, who have defied challenges to contribute significantly to the country's food security” added the source
The source further to said, “With this bountiful wheat harvest, Zimbabwe is poised to ensure an uninterrupted supply of essential staples such as bread and confectioneries,”
The surplus is expected to open avenues for increased wheat exports, providing support to countries grappling with global supply chain challenges occasioned by the conflict in Ukraine. This strategic move is set to bolster Zimbabwe's economic standing and strengthen her position in regional and international trade.
