A crime does not expire: CCC aspiring candidate learns the hard way

Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) aspiring candidate for Chivi South, Danisai Chokondere, came face to face with the long arm of the law after dodging arrest for five years.

According to an eyewitness who refused to be identified, Chikondere was arrested at the Nyahombe business center after having been identified by some revellers.

"People of Chivi South knew that Chikondere had stolen a cow before disappearing to neighbouring South Africa in 2018.

"On the fateful day, Chikondere was identified by some people who were drinking beer at Nyahombe and they tipped off the police leading to his arrest," said the eyewitness.

The allegations are such that in 2018, Chikondere stole a cow from Mr Tizirai Pedzisai, a ZANU PF member who then filed a report with the police.

Speaking to this publication, one member of the Police who preferred anonymity said the case was reported and it was the duty of the police to do a full investigation.

"A case was filed, and as the Police, we did our investigations without fear or favour," said  the police officer

Chikondere appeared in court on July 21, 2023, to answer the charges of stock theft.

"That he committed the crime in 2018 is neither here nor there; the crime remains as relevant as though it was committed just now," said the Police officer.

Chikondere’s circumstances are similar to those of G40 kingpin and aspiring independent presidential candidate, Saviour Kasukuwere, whose candidature hangs in the balance due to pending criminal charges that occurred before 2017 and whose cases are before the courts. No one is above the law, and the crime remains relevant no matter when it was committed.
