The Presidential Borehole Drilling Programme has made water available in most of the remote areas of the country, Harare Post has learnt.
Chief Gambiza, whose real name is Matthew Bidi of Chiundura, Midlands, informed this publication that the Presidential Borehole Drilling Programme had contributed to the availability of the precious liquid in his area bringing to an end the cry for water.
"I would like to thank President Mnangagwa for introducing the Presidential Borehole Drilling Programme in my community as we are now able to access safe drinking water. My people used to walk distances of more than three kilometers to fetch water, but as a result of the number of boreholes that have been drilled since the beginning of the year, water is now available and close enough to less than a hundred meters from every door step," said Chief Gambiza.
Chief Gambiza added that, the introduction of the Presidential Borehole Drilling Programme, had led to a sharp decrease in rape cases and Gender Based Violence (GBV) cases.
"There has been a notable decrease in rape and GBV cases in my area as a result of the installed boreholes. Before the installation of these boreholes, many women were ambushed and violated on their way to fetch water or on their way back, as they had to walk a long distance in bushy areas," said Chief Gambiza.
Another source from the Presidential Rural Development Programme informed this publication that about 633 boreholes had been sunk in the past year which would also enhance agricultural activities in rural areas.
"633 boreholes were drilled in the past year to facilitate commercial horticulture in rural areas. Masvingo has 131 boreholes, Mashonaland West 91boreholes; Mashonaland Central 92 boreholes and the Midlands has 57 boreholes. The same scheme was introduced in other provinces as well," said the source.
Meanwhile, the Government has embarked on a massive road rehabilitation programme under the Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme (ERRP), a programme that has witnessed the upgrade of the Harare-Beitbridge highway.
