Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) supporters are increasingly becoming uncertain over candidates selection process by that party, prompting them to consider conducting the internal polls on social media platform, WhatsApp.
Irked by the ever growing uncertainty, a source at CCC confided in this publication that the cynical suggestion was mooted in a CCC administered WhatsApp group ‘CCC Manicaland Province’ on 21 March 2023.
The source remarked, “The delay in candidate selection is fuelling divisions and causing disharmony amongst the party supporters. The template announced by the leadership excludes party members who are key stakeholders.”
The source added that CCC had already started creating provincial-based WhatsApp groups to already existing WhatsApp platforms which were being used for mobilization efforts.
“Some aspiring candidates were already posting their fliers in these WhatsApp groups despite a statement issued by Chibaya (National Organising Secretary, Amos) who urged members to desist from campaigning prior to the candidate selection process,” said the source.
The desperate measures by CCC members come on the heels of mobilization efforts by rival factions one led by CCC co-Vice President, Professor Welshman Ncube and the other one by CCC National Chairperson, Thabitha Khumalo. Prof Ncube penned a list of ‘original Ndebele people’ to represent that party in Matabeleland region while Khumalo at the behest of Chamisa counter mobilized stakeholders against the former.
Meanwhile, western embassies have expressed concern over the candidate selection process by Chamisa, remarking that it was undemocratic and not reflective of the people’s choices for candidates. Consequently, CCC is now surviving on a begging bowl as traditional financiers have lost faith and confidence in Chamisa. That party’s supporters are also accusing Chamisa of playing soft ball, with particular reference to the case of the incarcerated Job Sikhala who many think is a forceful and better leader to Chamisa.
