The National University of Science and Technology (NUST) has reversed its decision to hike tuition fees following the intervention of Students Representative Council (SRC).
According to a source in the student representative body, the students were advised by their leadership not to turn up for lectures as a way of protesting the fees hike from ZWL$ 240 000 to US$720 per semester.
NUST students` representative council, (SRC) president Muziwenkosi Sigidi-Moyo updated the students on the reverse of the fees structure.
“We want to update you on the recent developments concerning the call by the SRC for students to stay away from the University premises. After a meeting with the university management, we are pleased to announce that we have reached favorable resolutions that are pro-student. The US$720 fees has been revoked and removed from your portals,” said Moyo.
This is not the first time that universities have made an about turn on fees hikes. Earlier this year, the High Court ordered the University of Zimbabwe not to withhold the former`s results on account of non-payment of tuition fees.
The UZ Students Representative Council had dragged the institution to court after tuition fees were increased with some faculties required to pay over half a million dollars in local currency.
