Leader of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), Nelson Chamisa is at loggerheads with top lawyer, Beatrice Mtetwa who is questioning Chamisa’s political acumen to lead the opposition movement.
A source who spoke to this publication said that, Mtetwa has lost confidence in Chamisa as an opposition leader and was now convinced that he doesn’t possess the strategies to defeat ZANU PF in the forthcoming polls.
According to the source, Mtetwa believes that Chamisa was taking his supporters for a ride as he himself knows that it is a daunting task to wrestle power from ZANU PF.
“Mtetwa has begun to question the chances of CCC winning the forthcoming elections and has said that with Chamisa at the helm, CCC is now a sinking ship. Mtetwa is accusing Chamisa of lacking the zeal and the determination to defeat ZANU PF in the coming elections,” said the source.
The same source added that Mtetwa has assessed that Chamisa has chosen to make enemies with people who were supposed to give him sound advices.
The source claimed that Mtetwa has confided in his inner circle that CCC would perform badly in the coming polls unless Chamisa changes his strategy and stop creating enemies.
According to the source, Mtetwa criticized Chamisa for failing to read and take advantage of reports such as the Team Pachedu report which allegedly pointed out the weakness of the delimitation report. Mtetwa blamed Chamisa for ignoring alleged irregularities raised by Team Pachedu on the delimitation report choosing to dismiss the same as irrelevant and inapplicable to their cause.
Chamisa has been criticised by allies in the Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) for disregarding informative reports and advices from seasoned politicians like Tendai Biti who is his interim deputy. According to an insider, Chamisa is reported to have shredded Biti’s report on delimitation before he even read it.
“Biti wrote an intensive paper on the delimitation which he submitted to Chamisa. However, soon after Biti turned his back, Chamisa tore the report and remarked, “uyu anopenga uyu, zviiko zvaarikupedza nguva achiita.”
Most of Chamisa’s senior lieutenants believe that Chamisa cut a deal with President Mnangagwa, thus he is not in any hurry to win the forthcoming elections.
Meanwhile, Chamisa has recently been the target of criticism from usually pro-opposition academics and political analysts over his leadership style and lack of political structures. Former Cabinet Minister, Professor Jonathan Moyo, who for almost four years stood in Chamisa’s corner, has turned into one of his most vocal critics for similar reasons.
