The Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) is set to hold its inaugural elective congress in March, this year with Nelson Chamisa expected to appoint national and provincial leaders, the Harare Post can reveal.
A source who spoke to this publication said that preparations for the CCC congress were at an advanced stage, where that party’s constitution will be unveiled, which is set to empower Chamisa to appoint leaders of his choice.
“CCC is expected to hold its inaugural congress in March this year. The party is expected to unveil its new constitution which empowers the party president to appoint leaders. The new constitution will only allow CCC members to elect the president who will then appoint other leaders. If Chamisa is elected as president at the congress, he will then appoint leaders of his choice to hold party positions for a period of five years,” said the source.
The source said that some CCC leaders such as Tendai Biti, Charlton Hwende, Welshmen Ncube and Thabitha Khumalo were not happy with how the congress was being organised. Chamisa is reportedly organising the congress with the help of his trusted lieutenants such as Fadzayi Mahere, Gift Siziba and Joanna Mamombe.
The same source added that the new constitution was likely to trigger infighting within CCC as it gives Chamisa too much power.
“The new constitution is likely to trigger infighting within CCC as it gives too much power to Chamisa. It simply means that members have no say in electing leaders as Chamisa would be the only one with the power to choose leaders. Democracy is slowly slipping away from CCC,” said the source.
Efforts to get a comment from CCC interim national spokesperson, Mahere were futile as her mobile phones were not reachable.
