The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) has lined up a number of meetings and awareness campaigns to inform the public on the new electoral boundaries ahead of the 2023 plebiscite.
In a statement yesterday, ZEC Chief Elections Officer, Mr Utoile Silaigwana said the Commission will embark on an intensive multifaceted awareness programme to publicise the new electoral boundaries once they were gazetted.
“The Commission will embark on an intensive multifaceted awareness programme to publicise the new electoral boundaries once they are gazetted. An extensive voter education programme will also be launched to familiarise the electorate with the new boundaries. As per dictates of the law, the Commission will hold more stakeholder engagements that will act as a platform to inform the public about the newly delimited electoral units,” said Mr Silaigwana.
Mr Silaigwana further thanked ZEC employees for working around the clock to produce the preliminary delimitation report within the set timeframe.
Meanwhile, last Monday ZEC handed over a preliminary delimitation report to President Mnangagwa, which has new constituency and ward boundaries for the forthcoming harmonized elections.
In terms of the law, the President is required to cause the Report to be tabled before Parliament of Zimbabwe within seven working days from the date of presentation to the President.
Section 161 of the constitution stipulates that after delimiting wards and constituencies, ZEC must submit to the President a preliminary report containing a list of the wards and constituencies, with the names assigned to each and a description of their boundaries; a map or maps showing the wards and constituencies any further information or particulars which the Commission considers necessary.
