Former CCC legislator reeling in debts

Former Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) Epworth legislator, Ethridge Kureva is failing to settle debts he incurred during the by-elections held in March this year and risks being dragged to the courts.

A source who spoke to this publication said that Kureva borrowed nearly US$3000.00 from one Phidelis Chikonzo to bankroll his futile campaigns. However, repeated efforts by Chikonzo for Kureva to honour the debt, hit a snag as Kureva is now bankrupt.

“Kureva is swimming in debts as he is failing to repay the US$3000.00 he borrowed from Chikonzo during the March by elections. Kureva had promised Chikonzo that he would repay the money after getting his share of the election campaign funds from the party. However, after he was defeated by ZANU PF’s Zalerah Makari, he was abandoned by the party and was made to settle his debts alone. It’s now nine months after Kureva borrowed the money and he is still yet to settle the debts,” said the source.

The source added that Chikonzo was contemplating approaching the courts for remedy since Kureva had been ignoring his calls.

According to the source, Chikonzo tried to approach some CCC leaders to compel Kureva to honour the debt but nothing happened.

“At one time, Chikonzo tried to approach some CCC leaders like Gift Siziba, to urge them to compel Kureva to repay the money. Siziba just promised to approach Kureva and help him mobilise the required amount to settle the debts. However, Siziba also failed to come back to Chikonzo opting to ignore him instead,” said the source.

Meanwhile, it’s not only Kureva who is reeling in debts as other CCC legislators and councillors are also swimming in debts. In August this year, Chipinge Magistrate, Alfred Chinembiri ruled that CCC Chipinge Ward 7 councillor, Elijah Mugidho should immediately vacate a property he was renting from Mrs Daniye Sithole for failing to settle five months rental arrears.

Mugidho has been renting stand number 4159 located in Chipinge town and was supposed to be paying monthly rentals of US$50.00 per month. However, Mugidho used his political status to scare Mrs Sithole from demanding her rentals threatening her with unspecified actions.

Efforts to get a comment from Kureva and CCC national spokesperson, Fadzayi Mahere were futile as their mobile phones were not reachable.
