Government has prioritised the construction of Dzivarasekwa and Senga flats as it keeps up the momentum of fulfilling its pledge to strengthen social infrastructure and social safety nets.
Speaking in a post Cabinet Brief Acting Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Jenfan Muswere said Government has funded four blocks of flats at Dzivaresekwa which are now 65.8% to completion, whilst roads and sewer construction are currently 95% complete respectively.
“Government has prioritised the construction of flats in Dzivarasekwa and Senga, with a target of at least 2 relocation sites in each city or town. Construction works on the four blocks of flats funded by Government at Dzivarasekwa have now progressed to 65.8% of completion. Roads and sewer construction are each 95% complete, while the car park and culvert are 75% and 100% complete, respectively,” said Minister Muswere.
Minister Muswere also said construction of the four blocks at Senga has now reached 31.75%
“Overall progress on the four blocks at the Senga Former Messengers Camp in Gweru stands at 31.75%.”
Regarding Land Barons, Minister Muswere asserted that currently a total of 347 arrests have been made with 91 cases before the courts. 57 cases have since been finalised whilst 6 convictions have also been secured.
“Regarding the Investigation and Prosecution of Land Barons, the public is informed that a total of 347 arrests were made, and 91 cases are before the courts, while 57 have since been finalised, with 6 convictions having been secured,” he said.
He further proclaimed that Government is in the process of availing Devolution funds to Harare City Council (HCC) and other urban municipalities for the purpose of strengthening the local authorities’ law enforcement capacity.
Arrest and conviction of Land Barons comes at a time that Councils have been battling with Land Barons as the later is frequently involved in cases of unlawful grabbing and allocation of land.
Prioritisation of housing blocks in Senga and Dzivarasekwa by Government is also a fulfilment of the Second Republic’s pledge to provide housing for its citizens. Other on-going housing blocks are in Marondera and Beitbridge.
