MDC Alliance principal and Member of Parliament elect for Harare East, Tendai Biti has come under fire from the electorate from both political divides for exposing his cowardly nature by running away from the law and seeking political asylum in neighbouring Zambia.
The former Finance Minister was briefly detained after being subjected to a citizen’s arrest on the Zambian side at Chirundu border post as he tried to clandestinely enter that country to seek asylum.
“Tendai Biti arrested by citizens trying to cross over to Zambia to seek asylum. What happened to leading from the front? You can’t incite other people’s kids and then run,” said Lloyd Msipa.
Biti is currently being sort after by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) to assist in the investigations regarding the violent demonstrations which occurred last Wednesday in Harare that led to the deaths of six people.
“Why has he fled if he hasn’t done anything wrong? He must simply present himself to CID and answer to his charges. He can’t use his political position to evade justice. Biti has a thriving political career, so on what basis would he be seeking asylum in Zambia,” wrote Larry Charamba.
The legislator is on record saying that he would die to defend his vote if the MDC Alliance did not win the 2018 harmonised election, therefore, it baffled many to hear that he is on the run only to be seen in Zambia and not at the forefront as he had promised.
“What a coward! He was inciting others to go out and commit acts of violence while he knew that his bags were already packed. Some people will be thinking that he probably wanted to go out and meet with Jonathan Moyo and G40 to plan a civil war,” said Michael Mumisa.
Some of those accused of carrying out the violence on August 2 have already been released on bail by the Rotten Row Magistrate court and will have their day in court. Biti, for some reason, saw it fit not to cooperate with the police or even go through the proper legal process.
“Which danger are you talking about? He was called by Police to assist with investigations after the post-election violence, he decided to ignore. No one is bigger than the law itself #kwekwehim akwekweredzwa ne povo,” said Ngoni Makwishu.
