Government is set to distribute the 2022/2023 agricultural inputs under the Pfumvudza/Intwasa programme in order to match the agro-ecological regions and ensure optimum production.
This was revealed by the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development, today, through its official Twitter handle.
“The Government will this year distribute agricultural inputs under the Pfumvudza/Intwasa programme to match the agro-ecological regions to ensure optimum production and guarantee food security for the country,” read the post.
Citizens have applauded this move indicating that the nation will not face starvation because everyone would have been timeously enabled to produce a bumper harvest even on a small piece of land.
“The move by the Second Republic is very commendable. The Pfumvudza programme has gone a long way in improving the livelihoods of the people and no man will die of hunger,” said one peasant farmer Chido Machando.
Another citizen, Rudo Masenda welcomed the move saying that only lazy people would complain about hunger in the country adding that the Pfumvudza programme can be done by everyone who is willing to work.
“Only lazy people will complain about hunger in the country. The Pfumvunza programme requires hardworking people, if one is lazy they will not reap anything and will only have themselves to blame, Government would have done its part,” she said.
The country adopted the Pvumvudza concept in the 2020-2021 farming season on smallholder farming plots as a way of climate proofing agriculture by adopting conservation farming techniques and applying the correct agronomic practices for higher returns.
Due to the support that farmers got from the Pfumvudza/Intwasa programme, the country had a total harvest of 2.8 million tonnes of maize and 360 000 tonnes of traditional grains from the previous season.
