President Emmerson Mnangagwa has expressed condolences to the families of the three people who perished in the skirmishes that rose between the army and the police on one side and the MDC Alliance protesters in Harare city centre yesterday and pledged to institute an investigation into the matter.
“I wish to extend my sincere condolences to the families of the victims of yesterday’s violence. All human life is sacred, and their deaths are a tragedy irrespective of the circumstances. I would also like to wish a speedy recovery to all those injured in yesterday’s events,” said the President in a statement which was also posted on his social media pages.
President Mnangagwa urged the nation to move forward.
“The most important thing for us now is to move beyond yesterday’s tragic events, and to move forward, together,” said President Mnangagwa in the statement.
The President promised an inquiry into the event and justice for those who would be found responsible for the events leading to the deaths.
“I am therefore calling for an independent investigation into what occurred in Harare yesterday. We believe in transparency and accountability, and those responsible should be identified and brought to justice,” the President pledged.
President Mnangagwa appealed for unity and peaceful resolution of any differences that may arise among Zimbabweans.
“It is also more important than ever that we are united, and commit to settling our differences peacefully and respectfully, and within the confines of the law,” the President said.
