The political life of Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) interim co-vice president Tendai Biti is hanging by a thread as a section of that party’s supporters are pushing for his expulsion from the party on account of undermining Nelson Chamisa.
A source who spoke to this publication said that the call for the expulsion of Biti from CCC was triggered by a leaked audio of Biti that recently circulated on social media where he accused Chamisa of personalising that party.
In the leaked audio, Biti was heard saying, “The challenges of our current party are that it has been personalised and privatised. Even the name of the party is someone’s surname. Even the party symbol is someone’s handsome face. We cannot accept that,” said Biti in the leaked audio.
The audio was interpreted as referring to Chamisa because the CCC symbol has Chamisa’s face and the abbreviation of that party is believed to refer to Chamisa Chete Chete, a slogan that was propounded to uplift Chamisa’s political status.
According to the source, CCC members sympathetic to Chamisa have been irked by Biti’s denigration of Chamisa and have since called for his expulsion or suspension from that party.
“Biti’s audio has irked some CCC members and these members are now calling for the expulsion of Biti from the party. Biti’s loyalty to Chamisa and the party is now questionable and members want him expelled from the party as soon as possible. A petition is being written to compel the interim National Executive Council (NEC) to fire Biti from the party,” said the source.
The source added that Biti has been competing for limelight with Chamisa and this current audio where he attacked Chamisa was likely to be the final nail on his political coffin.
The same source said that if Biti survived the expulsion, he was likely to be relegated to a less influential post as Chamisa was expected to make changes of that party’s NEC.
Biti together with Job Sikhala and Charlton Hwende are accused of leading the Maruva cabal faction that is pushing for the ouster of Chamisa as the CCC president.
