Government has announced that the country’s Covid 19 recovery rate has reached 97 percent despite the increase of recorded Covid 19 cases in the past week.
In a post Cabinet briefing yesterday, Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Senator Monica Mutsvangwa, said that 242 537 people who were previously diagnosed with Covid 19 had fully recovered.
“Cabinet wishes to inform the nation that as at the 16th of May, 2022, Zimbabwe’s cumulative Covid-19 positive cases had reached 249 431, with 242 537 recoveries and 5 484 deaths. The recovery rate was 97%, with 1 279 active cases recorded,” said Minister Mutsvangwa.
The Minister added that the genomic sequencing test results that were recently conducted revealed that the circulating Covid 19 variants in Zimbabwe remain Omicron BA.1 and BA.2 and not the more transmissible BA.4 and BA.5 that have been reported in South Africa.
According to Minister Mutsvangwa, over six million people have received their first Covid 19 dose and efforts are being made to ensure that all eligible people were vaccinated.
“The cumulative numbers of vaccinations since the outbreak of the pandemic in 2020 have now reached 6 131 637 for the first dose, 4 381 446 for the second dose and 750 228 for the third dose,” added Minister Mutsvangwa.
According to Minister Mutsvangwa, 14 new Covid-19 cases were detected through the School Surveillance System and this brought cases recorded since the beginning of the second term to 66. She added that Government was planning to extend the phase two vaccination blitz campaign by ensuring that all eligible learners are vaccinated.
Meanwhile, Government has authorised all primary schools to resume all sporting activities. Secondary schools that have reached 70 percent Covid-19 second dose vaccination were also allowed to resume non-contact sporting activities.
