Zimbabwe has witnessed a rapid rise in prices of commodities on the local market, prompting the Government to allow ordinary citizens with access to US Dollar to import basic commodities for their own use to counter "substantial" price increases by retailers. He said this would be done through the lowering of import tariffs and other accompanying measures.
Meanwhile, the suspension of import duty on basic commodities creates competition for the local products which have enjoyed monopoly on the supply chain, hence creating price speculation which increased the price of basic commodities to the disadvantage of the consumer. The move by Government will help in lowering the ever rising cost of basic commodities.
