Government critic and opposition activist, Hopewell Chin’ono is set to join mainstream politics and is already eyeing to take over the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) secretary general position from Charlton Hwende.
A well-placed source who confided in this publication said that Chin’ono has recruited some cyber warriors to do his bidding in various social media sites, lobbying for the secretary general position.
“Chin’ono is now tired of being an outsider and has resolved to fully join the CCC. He now wants to join mainstream politics and he doesn’t want to join as a mere card carrying member. He is targeting the secretary general position that is currently being held on interim basis by Hwende. Chin’ono has recruited some cyber warriors to portray Hwende as a monumental failure who should not retain the SG post in the CCC,” said the source.
The source added that Chin’ono argues that ever since Hwende held that post even during their time in the MDC-Alliance, there have been no meaningful changes instituted in that party. The source said there is a general consensus within CCC that Chin’ono has proved to be knowledgeable on the country’s political dynamics than Hwende; hence he should take over the SG post.
The same source added that in the event that Chin’ono fails to grab the SG post from Hwende, he was targeting to be appointed the spokesperson of the CCC.
According to the source, Chin’ono admires the current spokesperson, Fadzayi Mahere, but he argues that she lacked in-depth knowledge on the political dynamics of the country.
The same source added that some CCC members are in agreement with Chin’ono that Mahere shouldn’t be the spokesperson as she is a legal person, while Chin’ono is a renowned media guru.
According to the source, it was not only Chin’ono who was jostling for the secretary general post, but the like of Joanna Mamombe was also positioning herself for the same position.
Efforts to get a comment from CCC interim spokesperson, Mahere, were futile as her mobile phones were not reachable.
