The MDC Alliance grassroots members have expressed displeasure at the GoFundMe project meant to buy a car for their leader, Nelson Chamisa, following a staged attack that occurred in Masvingo last week which left his current car damaged.
Expressing his displeasure toward the GoFundMe project was one MDC Alliance executive member, who preferred anonymity.
“The GoFundMe project is a noble gesture, but under the circumstances it is not a priority. I have raised my concerns within our executive meetings that we are missing the goal.
“We have the 2023 harmonised elections to prepare for, and according to me, the situation on the ground takes precedence over buying a car for Chamisa. If you look at the inventory of our party vehicles, you will find that the party does not have vehicle for provincial assemblies to facilitate recruitment and mobilisation exercises,” said the contact.
Contact further expressed disappointment at the failed initiative to mobilise youths for that party in preparation for the forth-coming 2023 Harmonised Elections.
“The lack of prioritisation within the party has derailed a lot of projects, we previously failed to mobilise adequate resources to support the project #RegisterToVote, which targeted youths,” said the contact.
Political Analysts have also weighed-in reiterating contact’s views that the GoFundMe project was inconsequential and misplaced.
“It boggles the mind how the Diaspora community can run around mobilising US$120 000 to buy a state of the art security car for Chamisa, yet they failed to raise funds to pay arrears for MDC Alliance 2018 election observers.
“One wonders if the MDC Alliance party is Chamisa’s goose that lays the golden egg, where he makes demands to finance his luxurious lifestyle, while ignoring that party and its supporters. The people in the diaspora most of them do not come and participate in the elections, they make lots of noise on social media but they are not voters. Mobilisation of real voters on the ground is playing second fiddle to Chamisa’s luxuries,” said political analyst, Ndumiso Mhlanga.
In May 2020, Chamisa openly admitted that he had not paid the MDC Alliance party workers, attributing the failure to Covid19. Meanwhile, at a recently held National Standing Committee meeting that was held at the new party headquarters in Mabelreign, MDC Alliance secretary general Chalton Hwende terminated contracts of all party workers without paying them.
