Leader of the main opposition party, MDC T has urged other opposition parties to desist from pursuing politics of vengeance and intolerance but device ways of harmoniously working with the ruling party and government.
Speaking during the MDC T’s 22nd anniversary in Harare yesterday, Mwonzora said the country was in need of a political dialogue, not insults, to pave way for the 2023 harmonized elections.
“There are some of us who are itching for elections even without reforms. We want the role of the security during elections to be clearly defined but we can only get that on the dialogue table. You cannot get that by insulting (President) Mnangagwa’s dressing or (Vice President) Chiwenga,” said Mwonzora.
Mwonzora added that his party would not be used to fight factional battles within the rival MDC Alliance and said his party would do things without pressure from anyone.
“Every day I’m receiving calls from Chamisa’s party officials who are asking me to recall (Zengeza West legislator) Job Sikhala and (Hwange Central legislator Daniel) Molokele. I have told them that we are not going to fight their internal wars so they cannot tell us who to recall. We act when we want, not when we you want us to fight your internal battles,” added Mwonzora.
Meanwhile, councilors in Gweru who were purportedly fired from the MDC Alliance by Chamisa dismissed the move as a “foolish political grandstanding” as they cannot be fired by someone who doesn’t have a party.
A councilor who spoke to this publication said Chamisa should not lie to the world that he has fired them when it was the councilors who had dumped the sinking political outfit.
“It’s just foolish political grandstanding by Chamisa. How can he fire someone who doesn’t belong to his party? As it stands, Chamisa has no political party and we belong to the MDC T led by Mwonzora, hence we cannot be fired by Chamisa. He should find other lies not to lie about firing us, we were not his councilors in the first place,” said a Gweru councilor who preferred anonymity.
Chamisa’s MDC Alliance and Mwonzora’s MDC T has been at each other’s necks fighting for the control of the opposition. However, the MDC Alliance has been losing members who continue to defect to either MDC T or ZANU PF citing lack of political direction within Chamisa’s camp.
