MDC-T Sunningdale legislator, Winnie Kankuni has revealed that labelling and verbal abuse she suffered at the hands of the MDC-Alliance leadership forced her to jump ship and join Douglas Mwonzora’s MDC-T.
In a video clip that has gone viral on social media, Kankuni says she was labelled a Zanu-PF project and called all sorts of names together with other legislators after they had defied Nelson Chamisa’s directive to disengage from Parliament to protest the recall of four MDC-Alliance members.
Kankuni further revealed that she had been openly told by the MDC-Alliance that they no longer wanted old age, those above 40 years to hold leadership positions, of which she was above sixty.
“I joined the MDC family in 2002 whilst it was under the leadership of the late Morgan Tsvangirai. It was not easy then, to engage in opposition politics but we endured. After all that sacrifice Chamisa labelled us Zanu-PF project because we refused to follow his orders and that we participated at the December congress.
“They called me all sorts of names and they removed me from the party’s WhatsApp group, so there was no point for me to remain at MDC-Alliance,” she narrated.
Kankuni said she was safe at MDC-T describing Mwonzora as an accommodative and mature leader compared to Chamisa.
“Am very safe at MDC-T despite my age. Mwonzora has no problem with that, he accommodates all ages. I am really happy here and i feel wanted,” she said.
She said given the opportunity, she will contest again in the 2023 harmonised election.
Kankuni together with David Tekeshe (Makoni Central) Joice Makonya, Virginia Mafuta, Peter Moyo (Southerton) and Rueben Chikundo (Goromonzi South) were among legislators who publicly ditched Chamisa for Mwonzora after the Supreme Court ruling that the MDC-Alliance’s rise to power was irregular.
