The embattled MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa is reportedly in a fix following revelations that some members of his party are not happy with his decision to suspend the restructuring exercise of districts, wards and provincial structures.
A source within the MDC Alliance confided in this publication that there was a general consensus within that party that Chamisa had suspended the restructuring exercise to protect his allies who are in some strategic positions.
“People are not happy with this decision to suspend the restructuring exercise. We don’t know why the president (Chamisa) has ordered that the Organizing Secretary stops the exercise. There is a belief in the party that the indefinite suspension of the restructuring exercise is meant to protect Chamisa’s allies who might lose if they are subjected to an election,” said the source.
The source added that the suspension of the restructuring exercise was not healthy for that party as its structures were occupied by known MDC T sympathizers who should be flushed out.
“The party structures have been infiltrated by known MDC T sympathizers and the restructuring exercise was going to flush them out of the system. We can’t continue having (Douglas) Mwonzora’s spies within our party. The president (Chamisa) should just agree to the restructuring exercise so that we can sanitize and insulate the party from sellouts,” added the source.
However, another source within the organizing department said the decision to suspend the restructuring exercise was reached after a thorough assessment of the situation on the ground.
“The restructuring exercise was meant to purge all perceived MDC T sympathizers from the party. However, it was to be halted after realizing that the targeted members were actually crowd pullers and by purging them we will be shooting ourselves in the foot. Some of the people who were a target of this restructuring exercise are very popular and expelling them through a restructuring exercise will not be the best decision for a party that has been dogged by defections. After considering this, I think the president was correct in stopping the restructuring exercise,” reasoned the source.
Efforts to get a comment form MDC Alliance Organizing Secretary Amos Chibaya were fruitless as he did not respond to messages send to him by this publication.
