Jailed MDC Alliance activists, Joana Mamombe and Cecilia Chimbiri are reportedly disgruntled over their party’s failure to secure their release from remand prison.
Mamombe and Chimbiri, who are in remand prison facing charges of violating Covid 19 lockdown regulations, have confided in their relative that they felt let down by their party.
“The girls are in low spirits. When I visited them last week, they looked pale and disturbed. They are disgruntled that the party leadership is neglecting them in their time of need. They said no senior member of the party is visiting them and the only visitors are their parents and lawyers,” said a source who declined to be named.
The same source said that the girls were contemplating leaving politics if they are released from prison.
“They (Mamombe and Chimbiri) told me that they were using their prison time to reflect on a critical political decision they want to take. They want to see if it’s still possible to take up politics as a career considering the challenges they have faced so far. From how I saw it, the girls are likely to quit politics upon their release,” added the source.
President of the little known Kambizi Party, Henry Mutasa, said it’s the nature of the MDC in all its various formations to dump its members when they are in problems.
“The MDC in all its various formations does not care about its members. Once you are jailed they will only give solidarity messages on social media but no one will come closer to you. What is happening to Mamombe and Chimbiri is not new as people like Tungamirai Madzokere, Last Maengahama and Yvvone Musarurwa were also neglected by the party when they were jailed for killing a policemen. These young people who want to commit crimes in the name of MDC Alliance should think twice because they will be alone in prison,” said Mutasa.
As if to confirm the allegations, the hype and bubbles that surrounded the incarceration of Makomborero Haruzivishe have already fizzled out. Analysts said the jailed activist would soon be in the dustbin of history.
Efforts to get a comment from Mamombe and Chimbiri’s lawyer were futile as he was not picking his phone.
