2023 electoral delimitation process not yet underway -ZEC

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) has dismissed as false reports by some media platforms which suggest that the commission has started 2023 electoral activities.

In a statement posted on its Twitter handle yesterday, ZEC said it is yet to come up with suitable timeframe to start work.

“Contrary to some reports, the commission has not resumed any electoral activities. As you may be aware, the current relaxed lockdown measures were announced on 01 March 2021 hence the Commission will deliberate on the appropriate time to resume the electoral activities.

“The Commission is only conducting preliminary delimitation desk work. Some pilot groundwork was conducted last year when measures were relaxed.”

Delimitation enhances democracy by enhancing fair and equitable distribution of seats, representativeness and guaranteeing equal voting strength.

ZEC said it had taken note of some concerns raised on social media that they should urgently include the issue of by-elections during its deliberations.

The Commission last year indicated that by-elections had been suspended indefinitely in compliance with a directive that had been issued by Vice President Constantino Chiwenga who is also the Minister of Health and Child Care.

ZEC took the decision as a precautionary measure to protect its employees and the general public from infections.
