Minister of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation, Kirsty Coventry said the National Youth Day was an important day which provided youths with the platform to dialogue with Government on their concerns towards national development.
Young Zimbabweans from all walks of life celebrated the National Youth Day which falls on the 21st of February each year, showcasing their contributions to the national economy enroute to achieving the envisaged upper-middle economy by 2030.
The celebrations to mark the day will be commemorated online due to COVID-19 regulations.
“The National Youth Day is a window of opportunity for engaging young people, to hear their views and opinions, to create dialogue with Government aimed at bridging intergenerational gaps, and most importantly to act on the needs of every young person,” said Youth Minister, Kirsty Coventry.
“As such, the Youth Ministry, through the Zimbabwe Youth Council, National Arts Council, Sports and Recreation Commission and the National Art Gallery of Zimbabwe, will host an online two-day enlightening programme from February 25 to 26, to celebrate National Youth Day,” she said.
In the same vein, the Zimbabwe Youth Council said that it was on #InnovationsCall for youths to submit their innovation ideas in order to secure financial or technical support.
“The virtual innovation conference is fast approaching and outstanding innovations stand a chance to secure a Government grant or technical support,” read the call.
Zanu PF acting Deputy Secretary for Youth Affairs, Tendai Chirau also enlightened on the day’s importance.
“21 February is the National Youth Day, making the nation’s recognition and celebration of the efforts of young people in carrying forward the legacy of sacrifice, innovation and dedication in pursuit of national development unto prosperity,” he said.
The Zimbabwe Tourism Authority also weighed in their voice advising youth to participate in the sector, as “youths were the most dynamic and fastest growing segment in the tourism sector.”
Cognisant of the COVID-19 pandemic, while recognising the day’s importance, the Students and Youth Working on Reproductive Health Action Team (SAYWHAT) urged youths to remain resolute towards youth’s development.
“We celebrate National Youth Day, an opportunity to continue fostering youth development aimed at achieving a generation of healthy young people. We urge youth to stay informed and healthy at all times.”
