Prominent Harare lawyer and former MDC-T spokesperson, Obert Chaurura Gutu has said that the illegal sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe by the West are not justified as they are meant to cause regime change in Zimbabwe.
Writing on his Twitter handle yesterday, Gutu said sanctions are a tool used by neo-colonialist powers to cause regime change in countries they have interests.
“Sanctions are the weapon of choice used by neo-imperialist and neo-colonialist powers to engineer and trigger regime change in countries where they harbour vested and entrenched socio-economic and strategic military interests. They failed in Cuba and they're failing in Zimbabwe,” said Gutu.
Gutu further said that sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe were not justified as they were not serving any purpose except that of making life difficult for Zimbabweans.
“Just ask yourself why they (the West) always seem to cry more than the bereaved. Is it because they really love you to bits and they are genuinely concerned about your welfare or is it because they're pushing their own sinister, but uniquely selfish agenda?
“What has happened to Iraq, Libya, Yemen and other countries where the purported reason for effecting regime change was to topple evil, repressive and corrupt dictatorships? In this day and age, if you still think that sanctions against Zimbabwe are justifiable, then you still have got a lot to learn about both international relations and global real politics,” said Gutu.
Gutu added that countries who imposed sanctions on Zimbabwe are only after the natural resources of the country.
“They don't love you. They love your natural resources. They love your land. They would rather have you as their surrogate state or their client state, taking and implementing instructions from them,” said Gutu.
The West imposed sanctions on Zimbabwe some two decades ago to punish the country which had embarked on land reform programme.
Repeated calls by the Zimbabwean Government, SADC and the African Union to have the sanctions unconditionally removed have fallen on deaf ears as the West unjustifiably maintained the evil embargos on Zimbabwe.
