The MDC Alliance trio of Joanna Mamombe, Netsai Marova and Cecelia Chimbiri was yesterday arrested for staging an illegal demonstration and using obscene language on Police officers.
In a statement, the National police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the trio who were driving a Toyota Fortuner without number plates were arrested yesterday outside the New Government Complex in Harare.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms the arrest of Joanna Mamombe, Netsai Marova and Cecelia Chimbiri in Harare today (yesterday) after a flash demonstration outside the New Government Complex.
“The trio were in a Toyota Fortuner without number plates followed a police vehicle with officers who had attended the scene and used abusive and obscene language on the officers, thus leading to their arrest,” said Assistant Commissioner Nyathi.
People who spoke to this publication condemned the behaviour of the trio and urged them to respect law enforcement agents.
“Why would the trio breach the lockdown regulations? Are they part of the essential service that they would be allowed to move around? It seems these girls want to spread COVID-19 considering that they also staged a demonstration last year amid the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Chido Matamba.
Engineer James Mavingire said the trio’s antics of staging a flash demonstration is a calculated move meant to attract the attention of the West.
“The flash demonstration and use of vulgar language on the police is a calculated move meant to irk the police so that they could be arrested. The trio knows that their arrest will attract the attention of the West so that when sanctions review time comes, there will be justification for the extension of these illegal sanctions,” said Engineer Mavingire.
Last year, the trio was arrested for faking abduction and torture by the State agents, an allegation which was proved to be false after investigations.
Currently Mamombe, Marova and Chimbiri are on ZWL$10 000 bail each for faking abduction in a bid to implicate State security agents of human rights abuses.
