The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) together with the Ministry of Health and Child Care have moved in to avert the spread of Covid 19 by fumigating potential hotspots in the capital, including areas such as Mbare musika,Seke Road Flyover  and Rezende Street rank.

The fumigation of potential Covid 19 hotspots has been necessitated by the recent escalation of Covid 19 cases in the country.

In a statement yesterday, ZRP spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the police have used the Public Order Vehicles equipped with water cannons to fumigate areas known for high human traffic.

“Last night (Sunday), the team used Public Order Vehicles (POVs) to fumigate areas around Samora Machel Avenue, Holiday Inn Hotel, Mbuya Nehanda Street between Speke Avenue and Robert Mugabe Road, Simon Muzenda termini (formerly 4th Street Rank), Copacabana Rank, Rezende Street Rank, Market Square termini, Corner Samora Machel Avenue and Chinhoyi Street, Robert Mugabe area (formerly Mutare Musika area) and Seke Road Flyover,” reads the statement from Assistant Commissioner Nyathi.

Assistant Commissioner Nyathi said areas such as Mbare Musika and surrounding areas were also fumigated yesterday using the POVs.

Nyathi also advised the public that fumigation of potential Covid 19 hotspots will be done after 1800 hours to allow the public the opportunity to move away from the targeted areas.

This is not the first time ZRP has deployed PVOs to fumigate potential Covid 19 hotspots in Harare as last year in April, the police partnered with Harare City Council to fumigate high risk areas.

As of yesterday, the country had 22 297 active Covid 19 cases and 528 fatalities. 13 213 people have so far recovered from the disease.
