Prominent Harare Corporate lawyer and former deputy Minister of Justice and Legal Affairs, Obert Gutu has said that the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) is one of the most credible and efficient election management bodies in the world.
Gutu’s comments were sparked by statements of the outgoing American President, Donald Trump, who publicly claimed that the November 3 elections in America were shambolic and rigged in favour of the eventual winner, Joe Biden.
“In their next elections, the United States should invite ZEC to enable them to obtain some insights on how to prepare for and conduct a free and fair election. Believe you me, ZEC is one of the most credible and efficient election management bodies in the whole world,” said Gutu.
Gutu even suggested that Zimbabwe should send election monitors and observers to monitor the next US elections.
“Election observers and monitors from Zimbabwe should be invited to observe and monitor the next elections in the United States. Americans have got a lot to learn from our experiences, I’m pretty sure it will assist them run more credible elections in future,” Gutu said.
Gutu further said that acts by pro Trump rioters who stormed the Capitol Building to disrupt the certification of Biden’s electoral win and later defecated inside the building dismisses the assertion that America is a paragon of democracy.
“These people (Americans) can’t teach Zimbabwe about democracy, human rights and the rule of law. Only their puppets can but into their lies that they are a paragon of democracy. In fact they are just thugs and far right white racists and fascists,” added Gutu.
Political analyst Tashinga Chabayanzara said Gutu’s applause of ZEC is commendable considering that the opposition in Zimbabwe has a habit of throwing brick bats at ZEC after every electoral defeat.
“ I commend Gutu for coming out and say that ZEC is a professional and credible electoral body .This will put to rest unfounded claims by the opposition parties in Zimbabwe ,particularly the MDC Alliance, who always blame ZEC for electoral malpractice whenever they lose elections,” said Chabayanzara.
Since his electoral defeat in 2018 by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, Nelson Chamisa is still falsely claiming that the elections were rigged, assertions that were dismissed by the Constitutional Court.Chamisa’s refusal to accept electoral defeat is akin to Trump’s who has refused to accept that he lost elections to Biden.
