The MDC-T Secretary General and that party’s presidential hopeful, Douglas Mwonzora has said that he is under attack from his enemies who want him arrested so that he will not participate at the Extra Ordinary Congress (EOC) slated for this coming Saturday at the Harare International Conference Centre (HICC).
In an interview with this publication, Mwonzora revealed that these past two weeks had been difficult for him as he was accused of embezzling party funds as well as tampering with party structures.
“These past two weeks were difficult for me as there were people who wanted me to be arrested for embezzling party funds. These people had no evidence, but they went on to attack my personality labeling me a corrupt Secretary General. They even approached the police and reported that I had misappropriated ZWL$300 000.Some of them also accused me of tampering with the 2014 party structures .How can I tamper with the structures when I’m not in the Organizing department? They are just afraid of me because they know that I’m going to win the MDC-T presidency this Saturday,” said Mwonzora.
Mwonzora further said that there are people who are afraid of him and they are now making up stories just to tarnish his image. He said that he is aware that there are people within MDC-T who are being paid by the MDC-Alliance and the G40 to spread falsehoods about him, so that the MDC-T 2014 structures would not vote for him on Saturday.
Mwonzora further told this publication that all allegations raised by MDC-T founding member, Leonard Chisvo against him were thrown out by the National Standing Committee.
Last week, Chisvo reported Mwonzora to the police accusing him of embezzling party funds. Chisvo further urged that party’s National Standing Committee (NSC) to expel Mwonzora from the party.
In a statement, the MDC-T acting spokesperson, Dr Tapiwa Mashakada, said Mwonzora has been absolved of the charge of looting party funds.
“The MDC-T would like to dismiss with the contempt it deserves, the malicious and baseless allegations peddled by our detractors to the effect that the MDC-T Secretary General Senator Douglas Mwonzora mishandled or put to his own use sums of money in the amount of ZWL$300 000.The Finance and Administration Committee and the NSC of MDC-T carefully looked into the allegations and found no truth in those allegations,” said Mashakada.
The MDC-T will elect a new president this Saturday to replace the late Morgan Tsvangirai who succumbed to cancer of the colon in 2018. Four candidates namely acting President Thokozani Khupe, Morgan Komichi, Elias Mudzuri and Mwonzora are battling against each other for the top post.
