Zimbabwe to continue engaging the US despite sanctions

Zimbabwe will continue engaging and reengaging the United States of America (USA) despite its call for sanctions on the developing country, The Harare Post can report.

Responding to the issuance of sanctions on Zimbabwe recently, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade on its Twitter handle said the USA should realize that its sanctions policy on Zimbabwe is pointless and will not produce meaningful results in terms of building relations between the two countries.

“Zimbabwe hopes the US will realize the futility of its sanctions policy in nurturing relations. Zimbabwe seeks friendship and cooperation with all hence will continue to engage the USA.

“The Government and the people of Zimbabwe maintain its opposition to unilateral sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe let alone its citizens by the US. In our view, that policy is retrogressive misguided and unproductive particularly at this time when Zimbabwe is engaging and re-engaging,” said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The US recently imposed more sanctions targeting Zimbabwean businessman Kudakwashe Tagwirei and Sakunda Holdings naming him for corruption. Targeting of Zimbabwean businesses means sanctions are not targeted on individuals, but are targeting all the Zimbabwean people exacerbating their economic challenges during this Covid-19 pandemic.
