We are liberating the MDC: Komichi

by Innocent Mujeri

Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) acting national chairperson, Morgan Komichi said he was currently seized with liberating the party from the jaws of power hungry members who have repeatedly abused the constitution to suit their wild ambitions.

In an interview with this reporter, Komichi said the party had been hijacked by selfish members who had no clue of the party’s founding principles and were on a crusade to destroy a party which the late Morgan Tsvangirai sweated to build.

Komichi further said the majority of the MDC members had been elated by the Supreme Court judgement as they see it as a harbinger to the returning of constitutionalism in the party.

“About 75 percent of the original MDC members are happy with the judgement. Members were no longer comfortable with Chamisa’s dictatorial tendencies and the judgement came as a relief to the MDC family. We are going to the extra ordinary congress and the party is soon going to be restored to its original founding values and principles,” said Komichi.

Komichi further said that the Supreme Court judgement was embraced and accepted by all 2014 MDC structures and that they now wait for the date of the extra ordinary congress to choose a leader of their choice.

Currently, verification of the 2014 structures is underway to determine the correct members who will attend the congress, he said.

He said the likes of Tendai Biti and Welshman Ncube will not be delegates during the extra ordinary congress as their names do not appear in the MDC 2014 structures. However, Komichi said the two will be engaged after the congress on their capacity as alliance partners.

Komichi also said members who had benefitted from the 2019 illegal congress were the ones who were irked by the judgement and he urged them to accept the judgement in totality and move forward.

“There are people who benefited from the illegal process (MDC 2019 Congress) and these are the same people who are denigrating the court ruling. They are crying more than the bereaved. My advice to them is that they must show their love for the party by accepting the judgement in totality and move on,” said Komichi.

He revealed that Chamisa was phoning MDC members, particularly the legislators; mayors and councillors coercing them to publicly endorse him or face expulsion.

However, Komichi said the MDC, with Thokozani Khupe as the acting president, had the power to withdraw, suspend or expel any party member.

Komichi refuted claims circulating on social media that he was on ZANU PF payroll to destabilise the opposition outfit.

“ZANU PF has got nothing to do with Supreme Court judgement. When the MDC constitution was violated, ZANU PF was not there so for someone to say that I am on ZANU PF payroll is wrong and insulting. I am a principled man and I have stood up to defend the interests of the party whenever I felt that the ethos of our struggle was being thrown to the dogs,” said Komichi.

The MDC acting chairperson said since the formation of the MDC, he had been loyal to the party and stood by it, no matter what. He therefore said he could not be cowed into silence by those who had abused the constitution.

Komichi further said MDC members should applaud him for bringing back the party on rail as it was currently  being drifted to some unknown direction by some misguided members who were taking advice from the disgraced ZANU G40 members.

The Supreme Court judgement delivered on Tuesday by Justice Bharet Patel which demoted Chamisa from the presidency of the MDC, has caused shivers in the party. The party’s cracks have widened with some members being at crossroads as they do not know which faction to align with.

Efforts to get a comment form Chamisa and Khupe were fruitless as their mobiles went unanswered.
