Marking the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and launch of the 16 days of activism against gender based violence which commenced yesterday in Harare, President Emmerson Mnangagwa said his government was working hard to protect women from violence.
“Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. We must all strive for a more equal and peaceful society, where violence has no place. In Zimbabwe we are working hard to protect women from violence, to eliminate this evil phenomenon once and for all,” said the President.
Minister of Women Affairs, Community and SME Development, Sithembiso Nyoni and United Nations Resident Coordinator, Ribeiro Maria officially launched the 16 days of activism against gender based violence under Zimbabwe’s national theme ‘Prevention, Protection, Participation and Services: End Gender-based violence!’
Delivering her statement at the launch, Minister Nyoni said her Ministry was against all forms of violence against women.
“Ministry of Women Affairs, Community and SME Development condemns disturbing incidences of rape, child marriages and other forms of violence against women in Zimbabwe which are a hindrance to peace and economic development.
“We should all act to intensify efforts to eradicate violence against women and girls in all forms, as well as challenge negative attitudes, stereotypes and norms that perpetuate Gender Based Violence in our society and culture,” said the Minister.
United Nations Zimbabwe Chief said there was need to change the environment so that women, girls and boys are comfortable reporting abuse, knowing they will be heard and that they will receive the services they need.
Zimbabwe’s Constitution contains constitutional provisions on gender rights and protection against gender discrimination. Section 80 (1) provides for every women to full and equal dignity of the person with men. Section 80 (3) outlaws laws customs, traditions and cultural practices that suppress the rights and personal safety of women.
Section 56 states that women have the right not to be discriminated against on the basis of their gender.
