There is enthusiasm in the civil service following an announcement by Government that the 13th cheque will be pegged on gross earnings.
This is a departure from the previous years where Government pegged its workers` bonuses on their basic salary.
One civil servant who works in the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development only identified as Marapa said he appreciated the efforts being done by our Government in meeting the demands of civil servants.
“I cannot wait to receive my full bonus pegged on gross income as it will allow me to meet costs such as fees and transport fares to visit my relatives,” said Marapa.
Another civil servant who works in the Ministry of Education said that he was pleased to get the 13th cheque before the festive season.
“Our bonus which is coming before Christmas holiday is really welcomed by everyone. The money will give us ample time to do our shopping and also to travel. Travelling on Christmas holidays is tiresome,” he said.
A Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade employee said that the development showed the success level of austerity measures.
“I now understand what the Government meant by austerity for prosperity. We have just started to enjoy the fruits,” he said.
The Government has been doing a lot to cushion its workers. To this end, President Mnangagwa`s Administration has promised to increase the salaries of civil servants.
