President Emmerson Mnangagwa is expected to deliver State of the Nation Address (SONA) tomorrow, as well as officially open the Second Session of the ninth Parliament.
A highly placed senior Government official who preferred anonymity revealed to this publication that SONA would be delivered soon after President Mnangagwa’s return from the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) and his speech is expected to focus on the current issues.
He said, “I am grateful that the President has just returned from UNGA where he met and discussed economic development issues with other Heads of States and Government from all over the world.”
He added, “As such, President Mnangagwa's SONA is expected to reflect on political, economic and social issues facing the nation.”
He went on to denounce the planned boycott or walkout of SONA by MDC's parliamentarians saying it does not only show immaturity but it is also illogical.
“I urge MDC Members of Parliament (MPs) to behave themselves whilst the President will be delivering his speech. Goodwill is all that is needed. There is no harm if they just sit and listen to the President’s speech. Walking out during President’s SONA or boycotting the whole event will not solve the current economic challenges that we are facing, but will actually worsen the situation,” he said
SONA is an event that brings together all the three arms of Government, namely Parliament, the Executive and the Judiciary.
