Government has handed over laptops to three schools in Marondera today during the International Day for Universal Access to Information at Rudhaka Stadium, in a move which is expected to bridge the digital divide and modernise the education sector.
Minister of Information and Communications Technology and Cyber Security, Kazembe Kazembe, handed over the laptops to representatives of the three schools namely, Dombotombo, Waddilove and Rakodzi, each school receiving 20 laptops.
Zimbabwe celebrates the International Day for Universal Access to Information under the theme, ‘Access to Information: Leaving no one behind,’ which will provide and explore opportunities among the challenges in accessing and maintaining the flow of information through the use of ICTs.
In 2016, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) marked 28 September as the International Day for Universal Access to Information, following the adoption of the 38 C/Resolution 57.
Addressing a gathering at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) recently, President Emmerson Mnangagwa said in line with the modernisation and industrialisation policy, Government is enhancing the quality of education to make it more relevant for modern technology and innovation.
President Mnangagwa added that, greater focus is now on science, technology and innovation while incubation hubs and industrial parks are being established throughout the country.
The International Day for Universal Access to Information celebrations was attended by Deputy Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Energy Mutodi and Permanent Secretary in the same Ministry, Nicky Mangwana among other senior Government officials, who participated in a march to commemorate the day at Rudhaka stadium.
