Chaos continue to rock the MDC Alliance ahead of the do-or-die harmonised elections as some district assemblies are threatening to throw their weight behind independent candidates.
Shamva North District Assembly has recently resolved to support independent candidate, Kenneth Nyamudzi against Esnath Mutambara who is the Alliance’s anointed candidate.
In a meeting held last week in Shamva North District, Cecilia Mukarati who is the MDC-T Shamva North district Assembly Chairperson said the Alliance refused to endorse Nyamudzi who is the favourite of the electorate. She said Nyamudzi’s candidature was denied on the basis that the seat was reserved for ZimPF.
Mukarati said the District Assembly did not agree with the arrangement because ZimPF had no structures and support in the constituency.
Mukarati told MDC-T members that they should support Nyamudzi whom she said had money.
The Chairperson encouraged MDC-T members to involve headsmen and chiefs in their campaigns since they are opinion leaders who can influence the electorate.
Ironically, the MDC Alliance had been at the forefront attacking and accusing ZANU PF of using traditional leaders for political mileage. Last year, the Alliance castigated Zanu PF for buying cars for chiefs.
The imposition of candidates in the MDC Alliance has seen the Alliance fielding 209 out of the 210 candidates for national assembly. It has also fielded 1 869 out of 1 958 local government seat.
Seventy-nine candidates from the MDC Alliance have resolved to contest as independent candidates.
