Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development, Professor Amon Murwira has urged graduates at Marymount Teachers’ College to go ahead and establish schools rather than wait for the industry to employ them.
Speaking to the 619 graduands who graduated today at Marymount Teachers’ College, Professor Murwira said that teaching in this country was for years, marked by a design that focuses on research and community service yet this design can only produce workers.
“For so many years, there has been a mismatch between college output and the demands of industry. For years teaching in this country has been following a design that focuses on research and community service yet this design can only produce workers.
“That is why after completing their studies, they say give us a job,” said Professor Murwira.
Professor Murwira said that Government had adopted the heritage philosophy as a cornerstone of the education system.
“The thinking behind is that no country can develop by keeping on buying foreign things and ideas. We need to deepen our research in local products. We need heritage based development,” said Professor Murwira.
Traditionally, the Zimbabwean education curriculum was focused on producing employees. However, the new thrust will see graduates becoming a new crop of employers who would employ others.
