More people trust ZEC

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission, (ZEC) is not moved by the hullaballoo being made by the MDC Alliance as it believes that there are more people who trust the commission than those that do not.

This was said by ZEC Commissioner, Dr Qhubani Moyo, during the famous Sunday Spotlight nigh talk-show on Star Fm.

“There are actually many Zimbabweans that trust ZEC. In my view, there are more Zimbabweans that trust ZEC, more than there are those that don’t trust ZEC. Except that those that trust ZEC are quite and satisfied with what we are doing properly.

“It is only those that are sceptical or that want to direct ZEC or dilute our independence that would continue sending messages like these that ZEC is not independent and fail to substantiate their claims,” Dr Moyo said.

Dr Moyo also said that the country was experiencing the best electoral environment since 2008.

“Zimbabweans … need to acknowledge that if we were to evaluate where we are today and say in comparative terms our current literal set up in 2008 and now we note that there is so much difference and improvement.

“We are in an electoral environment where there is so much tranquil, where there is so much peace so much space for all political players to canvass in different areas all together.  And so to me, so much has happened in in a positive way and we need to amplify,” he said.

He also said the majority of the people who were attacking ZEC for being biased were failing to substantiate their case.

“I am not hearing issues of serious substance in what has been raised …. They have not been able to indicate and point to us which areas they see ZEC being not transparent or where ZEC is taking a side.

In the current circumstances, we are just responding to issues that have been raised by one political grouping and clarifying them in terms of what we know to be the prevailing position in terms of the law,” said Dr Moyo.

He added: “The desire that the ballot papers be done in a paper that is whatever ordinary paper and so forth. That is no go area clearly the political parties will go and come and see the printing process but we cannot compromise the election by talking about certain ingredients of the election material that is supposed to be our preserve.”

Dr Moyo also spoke of the independence of the Commission saying that “when people say that the Commission must be independent, they must also understand that it should be independent from the ruling Party, and also independent from the opposition political parties.”

He also implored that ZEC “be given a chance and mandate to do its job in terms of the laws of the land,” adding that, “that is how we are doing it now. Whether you agree with it or not, we are not worried as long as our job is done in terms of the law.”
