President Emmerson Mnangagwa today graced the town of Chitungwiza for the national cleanup campaign.
The national cleanup campaign was launched on 5 December 2018 so as to keep our environment clean and it is done on the first Friday of each month.
President Mnangagwa said that he had finally managed to come to Chitungwiza after failing several times due to other commitments.
“I came here after being invited by the Minister of Environment, I failed to come before but I made it a point that I come today. I promised several times to come to Chitungwiza but I have been failing. So I arrived last night so that I could be able to be with you today in recognition of the national cleanup campaign,” he said.
President Mnangagwa also highlighted why the environment should be kept clean.
“On 5 Dec last year, we made this promise to keep the environment clean. Our environment should be clean no matter where you are. Some diseases come from dirt. Cholera comes from dirt. No one wants to be ill or die, our lives should be kept clean,” he said.
He invited the mayor of Chitungwiza to his office seeing to discuss a plethora of challenges facing the town of Chitungwiza.
“The Mayor came to me saying that Chitungwiza is getting water twice a week. I do not know why. I am asking the Mayor to find time to come see me at my office with his problems, so we can help where we can. Do not keep quiet with your problems’” said the President.
The President encouraged the council to sit down and look for places in different areas where people can put their refuse as a community so that refuse trucks can come to collect for recycling.
The President expressed gratitude to the citizens of Zimbabwe for the role they are playing in keeping the environment clean.
“As I was coming to Chitungwiza, I noticed how different Harare is from November last year up to now. It has improved tremendously. Credit does not go to the Government but to citizens who have heeded to the call of cleaning up their environment’” he said.
The President was accompanied by Minister of Environment, Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Prisca Mupfumira, Minister of Health and Child Care Obadiah Moyo and Minister of State for National Security Owen Ncube.
