President Emmerson Mnangagwa has today sworn in a new substantive Prosecutor General, Kumbirai Hodzi at State House.
Hodzi has been the Acting Prosecutor General since the resignation of former Prosecutor General Ray Goba. Awaiting the new Prosecutor General is the prosecution of more than 700 MDC supporters who were arrested for looting and destroying properties in the recent violent demonstration.
Hodzi holds a law degree from the University of Zimbabwe and a first class Master`s degree in International Public Law with the University of Lund, Sweden. He is studying towards a doctorate in International Law.
Hodzi was also a prosecutor and law officer for many years, and was once attached to the Criminal Tribunal. He also practised as a solicitor in the United Kingdom. He served as a law lecturer, legal proctor and Chairperson of the Legal Advice Clinic.
Before he became Prosecutor General, he acted in the position since July 2018. Citizens have indicated that Hodzi is the right candidate for the job because he had been working in the ministry for quite some time.
A Senior Government official who refused to be named said, “The new Prosecutor General is a very objective man who calls a spade a spade. We expect him to deal with the perpetrators of last week’s violence with justice. His judgement should not be marred by MDC leader, Nelson Chamisa`s utterances that the hooligans who looted people`s shops and destroyed property including killing innocent citizens must be released so that he can start a dialogue with President Emmerson Mnangagwa. No one is above the law.”
MDC party together with affiliate organisations such as Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Union (ZCTU) protested in a demonstration that led to loss of five lives and destruction of properties worth millions of dollars.
