Mudzuri survives a chop

…directed to write a report

Embattled MDC co- Vice President, Engineer Elias Mudzuri has been forced by the party’s National Council to write a report to that party leader, Nelson Chamisa, explaining why he attended a State House function without the blessing of his party.

Mudzuri attended a State House function for the presentation of Parliament’s Presiding Officers to President Emmerson Mnangagwa. The MDC had resolved to snub the function arguing that President Mnangagwa was not a legit president. Mudzuri’s attendance was viewed by his colleagues as tantamount to endorsing the President.

The MDC held several meetings where Mudzuri featured prominently on the agenda with most of the pro-Chamisa members baying for his blood. The National Council meeting held on Saturday was expected to decide on Mudzuri’s fate.

The National Council meeting which was attended by 140 members lobbied for the expulsion of Mudzuri. “Most of the members wanted Mudzuri to be expelled immediately. However, the president ruled that Mudzuri must be given an opportunity to explain himself,” said an insider.

The source said it was then that the council resolved to make him write a report to Chamisa explaining why he attended the State House function.

Mudzuri is being persecuted for his ambition to challenge Chamisa’s presidency in the 2019 elective congress. Ever since he met President Mnangagwa, Mudzuri has been carrying the sell-out label. However, other party officials such as Harare Mayor, Hebert Gomba have been hobnobbing with the President on several functions. This raised issues of hypocrisy and selective application of party rules.

Speaking at the same meeting, Chamisa revealed that they want to push for a dialogue with Zanu PF with a view to solving the economic challenges dogging the country. He said his party would engage in a series of demonstrations across the country to force President Mnangagwa to the negotiating table.

President Mnangagwa unequivocally told Zanu PF delegates at the party’s recent annual conference that there was no possibility of a Government of National Unity.

The MDC leader bemoaned the arrest of the Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) members. He revealed that the MDC had intended to join them upon their arrival in Harare.

Chamisa also admitted that there was ideological crisis in the MDC, hence the establishment of the Morgan Tsvangirai Institute for Leadership Development (MTILD). The MTILD is fashioned along Zanu PF’s Hebert Chitepo School of Ideology.
