Cotton Producers and Marketers Association (CPMA) has embarked on a nationwide tour to conscientise cotton farmers on good agronomic practices following the on-going distribution of cotton inputs under the Presidential Input Support Scheme.
Cotton growers across the country have hailed Government for the early distribution of cotton inputs which has assisted them to make early preparations.
Each registered household is receiving two bags of compound L and top dressing fertiliser, 20kg of cotton seed, all the needed chemicals as well as Napsack spray.
In an interview with Harare Post, Cotton Producers and Marketers Association National Chairman, Stewart Mubonderi said they were moving around all cotton growing areas teaching cotton farmers how to make good use of cotton inputs for maximum production.
“We are pleased as an association that farmers have already started receiving cotton inputs, not only us but the farmers as well. Farmers have already started tilling their land and making other necessary preparations. We have already covered some parts Hurungwe in Mashonaland West and we are currently in Mutoko district interacting with farmers.
“We are assisting farmers on how to register and access Presidential cotton inputs, telling them the benefits to the farmer, community and the nation at large,” he said.
“On top of inputs, COTCO tractors will also be available across the country to assist farmers in tilling their land. About 50 000ha will be tilled for free out of the targeted 400 000ha targeting only vulnerable families. This is done to motivate farmers to increase hectarage. Agritex officers and our members will also be on the ground to assist farmers whenever need arises,” he added.
About 150 000 new farmers have expressed interest in growing the white gold this 2018/2019 farming season.
The cotton industry is witnessing an overwhelming response in the registration of new cotton farmers as Government continues to avail free cotton inputs under the Presidential Input Support Scheme.
