According to S&P Global Mobility, the Tesla Cybertruck was the most registered EV pickup in the US. In fact, the Cybertruck accounted for 45% of the total registered electric pickup trucks in May, beating both the Ford F-150 Lightning by a wide margin.
We reported at the start of the month that the Tesla Cybertruck was the best-selling all-American electric pickup truck in the US during March-June. Tesla reportedly managed to beat both the Ford F-150 Lightning and the Rivian R1T with a total of 10,000 units sold.
If that wasn’t enough to confirm the popularity of the Tesla Cybertruck, the EV pickup has managed to outdo its rivals when it comes to registration numbers in May 2024. According to data compiled by S&P Global Mobility and reported by Automotive News, a total of 3,907 Tesla Cybertruck units were registered in May in the US. By comparison, registrations for the Ford F-150 Lightning and the Rivian R1T stood at 2,353 and 1,237 respectively. So, there were more Cybertruck units registered than the Ford F-150 Lightning and Rivian R1T combined.
Aside from the top three mentioned above, the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Hummer EV pickup occupied the fourth and fifth spots with 668 and 359 units registered respectively.
That said, the Ford F-150 Lightning still leads the EV pickup race in 2024 as registrations for the Ford EV reportedly stood at 13,434 vs Cybertruck’s 7,879 during the January-May period.
But with the kind of numbers the Tesla Cybertruck is putting up, the Ford F-150 Lightning could soon play second fiddle to Tesla’s debut pickup truck. Despite lacking cheaper trims and amidst frequent reports of quality control issues, the Tesla Cybertruck is soaring in popularity. So, it is not hard to imagine Cybertruck sales reaching new heights when more cost-effective models hit the market later this year. - Los Angels Times
