Mamombe implicated in illicit mining deals

A source who spoke to this publication disclosed that one of Mamombe’s close associates approached her with red mercury, a substance found in land mines and grenades, seeking for the parliamentarian’s marketing prowess.

“It is surprising to note that the CCC are hypocrites, on one hand they criticize mining production by the investors who are profitably utilizing the land, on the other hand they are the vanguards of land degradation, as they promote the destruction of our environment through the sale of illegal and deadly substances to the environment.

“Joana Mamombe was approached by her friend last week who sought her assistance to sell red mercury, which she had smuggled from Mozambique. Mamombe promised to help her after consulting with her acquaintances who deal in the illegal sale of mercury as well as the smuggling of minerals in and outside Zimbabwe,” said the source.

Red mercury is a very dangerous substance that is prohibited by law.  Deadly explosions have been experienced in and around the country with people meeting untimely death as a result of open grenades and landmines in order to access the deadly liquid in a bid to make a quick buck. On 30 January 2013, an explosion occurred in Chitungwiza killing some family members as they tried to access red mercury for resale.
